Marriage Matters

"When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army nor be charged with any duty; he shall be free at home one year and shall give happiness to his wife whom he has taken." -Deuteronomy 24.5

Following laws about divorce there is this not about marriage. When a man was married he was excused from military service for one year. This time was to be invested in his new family, and to begin a family. God knows that marriage matters, and because of the fallen world we live in, He knows it's hard. He allowed for a man to be free from military duty for one year to invest in his marriage.

Marriage matters, because it is in marriage that a man and a woman become one. The two halves of God's image reflected in humanity come together as one and are able to present the full image of God to creation. It is important that we invest in our marriages. We live at a time where we can't take a year off of work to be at home and invest in our marriages. But there are things we can do to strengthen them.

Men, are you investing in your marriage? Do you have date nights? Do you bring flowers? Do you tell your wife you love her and that she's beautiful? Do you kiss her? Do you pursue her? Do you fight for her? Does your marriage matter to you?

I'm not a perfect husband, which my wife will be the first to testify to, and try as I might, I never will be. But that isn't an excuse not to try, and not to invest in my marriage. Marriage matters so much that God excused men from military service for a year. What things can we give us to invest in our marriages? What can we do to pour into our wives?

Let us be men who see the value of marriage, and let us do all that we can to strengthen ours.

"Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."

To God alone be the Glory!

Strength and Honor
